Sellers Guide

Never:
- Never give your address or post code if asked for by phone. Once you have confirmed identity (request a landline number -this is a good way) then still beware.
- Never
invite any buyer to your home to view your machine. If you do intend to do this make it clear that they must bring a form of identity with them (driving licence or passport) and a photo will be taken of them. Any genuine buyer will be happy to do so.
-Never Allow test rides without full cash payment

Do:

- Use a neutral venue where you can guarantee your safety, take some friends with you.
- Inform buyers that photo ID and proof of address is required when meeting - honest buyers will not mind.
- Make sure you have the money before parting with your bike. - Even if buyer offers to leave a car or other item as a guarantee.

DO NOT ACCEPT A CHEQUE AND WAIT FOR IT TO CLEAR WITHOUT MAKING SURE YOU HAVE SEEN SOME FORM OF IDENTITY (DRIVING LICENCE OR PASSPORT)

Be aware to check that you are not being followed home.
Take any suspicious van or car registration details and description of any person involved.

Please do NOT use BALBACKIE as a meeting venue for buying or selling a machine.
Always lock your bike even if in a Garage. If possible park a car in front of garage doors.

Extra Note
It is advisable for you to start using a Security Chain and Padlock when your bike is not in use at an event, even at Balbackie, and more so if we are visiting other venues.
While we have Security Officers at all events, it is everyone's responsibility to be on the look out and to report anything of suspicion.

Stolen Machines

15/10 - See here for disk lock alarm  ebay disk lock - These are also available from J&S and other bike stores. Highly Recommended

On the night of Saturday 4th October/ Morning of Sunday 5th two youth members Motorbikes were stolen from Motherwell. This was done by removing the Doors from a shed. If you keep your bikes in a shed you need to ACT NOW. If you want to make it more difficult for the thieving rats out there then you need to make sure they cannot remove the doors by removing the hinge screws. To do this I recommend the following :

  1. Replace the screws with long bolts and either loctite the nuts on and/or bend up the bolts on the inside of the shed.

  2. Place either metal plates or wooden planks from top to bottom to cover the outside part of the hinges. These should be screwed and bolted from inside and out. Ideally to brace this better place planks on the inside as well and bolt/ screw all the way through.

  3. Where the hinges run horizontally along the shed doors then do the same as (2). Cover the hinges with metal plates or wood and bolt/ screw from inside and out.

  4. Get a shed alarm (£10-25) and make sure any wires to the siren and control unit are well covered so they cannot be cut before the alarm goes off.

  5. Either use internal shutters or window security covers to stop them peering in and eyeballing any internal security systems or valuable kit.

  6. CHAIN EVERYTHING in awkward to get at places, to other equipment or immovable objects.

  7. Maybe connect tin cans or other noisy items to the doors or bikes so that they will make a noise if anyone tries to move them. - Get an Alarmed Disk lock The theft from ourselves was done within 20 feet of the house and a number of adults and no one heard a thing.

  8. If possible park a car in front of garage or shed doors.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not get caught out like we have - this method of unscrewing the hinges is apparently not uncommon - If I had known this I would have done something about it.

Our family, especially the kids who helped pay for their machines out of their own pockets, would like your help in locating their bikes. Please see pictures and details below. Your help would be greatly appreciated. A reward is be offered for any information leading to the recovery of one or both bikes and even better the identification and conviction of the low life scum who would steal from our children. If you see these machines or know where they are then please contact the police on either 01698 202655 or the normal police numbers or myself on 07753 623 689. I will respect anyone who wishes to provide information and remain anonymous.
